Now Hiring at $30/hr
So you’re interested in working on our shoveling and snowblowing crews with us? Great! Some people in the industry call snow removal “white gold” because we go out, work hard, and make a lot of money in 1 day. It’s hard work, but it’s fun to work hard with your friends, and get paid doing it!
How Do I Get To Work In The Snow?
You’ll need reliable transportation to get to the shop for dispatch. Sometimes we are able to pick people up on the way in, but the best answer is to have reliable transportation to get here. From the shop into the field you’ll be in a Summit branded truck with one of our full-time employees. No need to drive, just ride along and throw the snow.
What gear should I have?
THIS IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE. Residential sidewalk crews will be outside for short bursts, over a long period of time. Shifts can be anywhere from 8 to 16 hours or more, depending on the storm. You do not need to bring tools (shovels, etc), but you must be prepared for the weather. You can always remove gear, but if you don’t have it and need it, things get miserable quickly. Gear you need:
- Warm, waterproof boots
- Layers of wool (wicking) socks.
- A backpack for snacks, water, extra socks, back up gloves, etc.
- Snow pants or bib overalls, preferably waterproof
- Gloves, at least two sets, preferably waterproof.
- Hoodie to go under your coat and cover your head and neck
- Balaclava, ski mask, or other heavy duty face covering
- Stocking cap
- Anything else you may want for cold weather
What are the hours like?
Commercial - generally dispatches first. Commercial clients need to be serviced quickly to make sure their customers have safe places to walk in their parking lots and on sidewalks. Every commercial client wants to be serviced as quickly as possible, so Commercial sidewalk will dispatch anytime, 24/7 as soon as the snow stops.
Sometimes commercial sidewalk will dispatch during a storm to make multiple passes and keep businesses accessible. If this is the case, initial passes through a list of properties will be to gain access. Subsequent passes will clean up the detail work. This can make for a long shift, as multiple passes take time.
Residential - sidewalk crews dispatch after snow stops any time between 6 am and midnight. If snow stops between midnight and 6 am, residential sidewalks will wait to dispatch at 6 am to give crews a reliable window to rest before the storm. If snow stops at 11pm, crews will dispatch at 11pm and service all accounts until completed. Generally, residential sidewalk crews will make only one pass after the storm is over.
As stated above, shifts can last 6 to 16 hours or more depending on the storm. You should plan on working through the end of the event if possible, as swapping out crew members during the storm can be difficult and time consuming.
What time should I show up?
15 minutes before scheduled dispatch is appropriate. Give yourself time to get through the snow and possible traffic and be 15 minutes early. Stock up on free snacks, drinks, water, and coffee at the shop and get ready to rock. A pre-shift meeting is held to outline the scope of work and how we will be approaching the storm. Teams will then dispatch in pairs and get into the field. As crews finish their lists, they will jump on the bottom of the nearest crew’s list and work toward the middle. Crews will cascade from list to list until they are all finished and we head back to the shop.
How does pay work?
Summit runs payroll weekly. Checks hit direct deposit accounts on Fridays. There is a two week period between the end of the pay cycle and pay day on Friday.
Do I have to be here for every storm? What if I’m a student and have class?
You do NOT need to be here for every storm, however if you say you are coming in, we will expect you and plan for you to be on a particular team. As the storm approaches, all extras will be contacted by Summit via text or email. If the storm requires 8 extras, the first 8 extras to confirm they will work the storm will be selected, contacted, and be expected on time and ready to go at dispatch.
A Message from the CEO, Ted Glaser:
The lawn care and landscaping industry as a general collective has a smudge on it. Riddled with unprofessionalism, grimy and dirty dudes, rusty trucks, unmet expectations, and poor customer experiences. Sounds pretty lame, right?
